What is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?

Minimally invasive spine surgery represents a surgical philosophy to minimize soft tissue damage that normally occurs during surgery. This involves not only making smaller incisions, but also limiting the amount of soft tissue disruption beneath the skin. While the incisions may be considerably smaller than standard incisions, the procedure performed is essentially the same. What this means to patients is less post-operative pain and a faster recovery. In addition, infection rates are significantly lower with minimally invasive techniques.

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

Patients should know their treatment options including non-operative treatments. This should be explained in detail by their surgeon. They should also know the potential consequences of not undergoing surgery. A second opinion is never a bad idea especially if their surgeon is recommending a fusion. No surgeon should be offended by a patient receiving a second opinion. Spine treatment recommendations can vary significantly between providers. Some surgeons are much more aggressive and tend to recommend fusion when less invasive options would suffice.

What Are Patients saying...

“Dr. Stone is highly skilled, experienced and confident which is what you are looking for in a surgeon related to back surgery. He is not only at the top of the game among his peer group, he is a kind and caring person that has great bedside manner. My surgery resulted from a broken back and what he did for me is give me my life back and greatly improve the quality of my life. I have referred another patient to him who had an identical experience and came out with the same excellent results.”

“I don’t typically write reviews… but when your health and well-being is impacted so dramatically I feel it’s important. For over a year and a half I suffered from lower chronic back pain. I’ll spare the details… but the pain got so debilitating that I would have to get a wheel chair to make it through the airport on business travel. Sleeping on the couch sitting up became a way of life. I’m now about 90 days post-op and I ran for the first time in 6 months, pain free today! Dr Stone performed a discectomy and lamanectory on me; my only regret was that I didn’t have the procedure done a year ago. Pain level went from a 9 to post-op 2, overnight. Within 12 hours I was back to work. I can’t say enough positive things about the entire experience. Happy to be standing straight again and thankful for a wonderful surgeon!”

“Dr. Addison Stone is the best of the best, and I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a back surgeon. He specializes in minimally invasive work, and does a great job – I hear the insurance companies like him because of his uber low complication rate. I had serious problems with thickened ligaments, bone spurs, herniation, and trapped nerves and Dr. Stone completed the work like a champion. I have relief from my pain, can sleep on my back for the first time in over a decade-thanks Dr. Stone!”

“Dr. Stone and his team are miracle workers! My cervical spinal cord was rapidly becoming compressed, leading to total numbness in hands, loss of control in arms and legs. He was able to schedule me right away for surgery, a fusion of 3 levels, 3-6. Recovery and reversal of symptoms has been speedy. He is an excellent and knowledgeable surgeon, and is nice and really listens to you. I highly recommend him!”

“Have already recommended Dr Stone to someone else from my office who is calling to set an appointment.”

Bob Saunders, Healthgrades (Dec 21, 2017)

“Spent a lot of time with me and explained in depth of my condition! Reviewed my MRI and x-rays with me. When I left my appointment I was so happy that I finally understood my back issues, someone finally took the time explain it me! Not only was Dr. Stone great so was his assistant! I will recommend anyone to Dr. Stone!”

“Sometimes it seems as if people who have had negative experiences post about it more quickly then the people who have had great experiences. Therefore, I feel the need to RAVE about the great care and treatment Dr. Stone and his staff provided my father! My father was in tremendous back pain due to a herniated disc pressing on his nerves. He was seen by a couple of doctors, one even a previous surgeon of his, and yet they both said they couldn’t get him in for at least 2 weeks. Did I mention that he was in SEVERE pain?!?! (I followed up by calling his previous surgeon’s office and basically begging them to get him in sooner. The receptionist was rude and not at all empathetic). When I called ProOrtho, the experience from the first phone call was 100% different. I got Ashley on the phone, she is an amazing receptionist–she listened to my whole story and got my father in with Dr. Stone with a bit of juggling, right away! He was in so much pain that Heather, Dr. Stone’s assistant was also able to shuffle things around and get him in earlier than scheduled. Dr. Stone met with my father, assessed his pain and MRI and was able to get him in for surgery the next day! UNBELIEVABLE. It couldn’t have gone more smoothly or better. Post surgery we had several questions, and between Ashley, Heather, and Dr. Stone, they were addressed and answered quickly and thoroughly! So glad that we were referred to Dr. Stone and his office–would highly recommend!!!! Also, am a big believer that a receptionist plays such a big role in one’s opinion of a business–Ashley was amazing and presented a great, helpful image of ProOrtho from the first phone call!!! Thanks to all of you!”

“Dr. Stone gave me my life back, and I am being absolutely serious. I was apprehensive about surgery for my back, as all you hear are bad reviews… but he was doing something different, and he left the integrity of my spine intact… and as a result, I have no more back pain, and no more leg pain. Its amazing! I feel like myself again, and have so much energy that I need to remind myself that I am still healing. I can not recommend him enough. He truly cares.”

“He got me in on an emergency visit. After reviewing my MRI and testing the nerve damage he got me in for surgery within a week. He explained everything very well and made me feel comfortable with our decision to have surgery and the procedure he was using. My results have been Perfection! So excited to be relieved of pain and looking forward to a healthy back and active lifestyle again!”

“Can’t say enough good things about Dr. Stone and Pro Ortho. At every level the staff was excellent. I truly got the feeling everyone I came in touch with enjoyed there job and going to work everyday at Pro Ortho. I have never had this kind of personal attention from a medical facility and also I have no pain and had no pain from almost the minute I woke up after surgery. Everything Dr. Stone said would happen…happen just the way he said it would…Thank you Dr. Stone…. Job well done!”
